This May, keep on streaming Canadian on the NFB platforms! This month’s premieres include the latest from a Winnipeg animation legend, a short documentary that takes viewers on a creative road trip and the debut of two new projects on YouTube.
On all NFB platforms
- Wanda Nolan takes viewers on a road trip across Newfoundland with photographer Ting Ting Chen and Chen’s inspiration, Robert Tilley, in the award-winning short documentary The Muse.
Designed for YouTube
- The ON FILMEdocumentary initiative is designed to spark meaningful dialogue around sociopolitical issues that are relevant today.
- In the Closet, by Toronto-based writer, filmmaker and comedian Ajahnis Charley, is a hilarious and intimate docu-series about non-binary fashion and identity that isn’t afraid to wear its heart on its drop sleeves.
Both of these projects will also become available on NFB.ca and NFB Apps at a later date.
Beginning May 1, NFB.ca celebrates Asian Heritage Month with its Asian Canadian Perspectives channel, while also showcasing a selection of this year’s Canadian Screen Award–nominated films. And to mark World Press Freedom Day, May 3, it’s spotlighting the role of media, information and misinformation in times of war.
And remember: on our online platform (NFB.ca and NFB Apps for mobile devices and TV) and YouTube, you’ll find more than 7,000 films available to stream free of charge.

ON FILME

- Amplifying voices, informing thinking, enriching debate. In this first edition of ON FILME, three directors present four works across a diverse range of complementary formats, each exploring a contemporary theme of their choice. Mounir Kaddouri (a.k.a. Maire de Laval) will launch the project, followed by Anne-Lovely Etienne and Simon Coutu in the upcoming months.

Good Luck to You All by Cordell Barker (8 min 15)

- A child’s innocent play takes an odd turn in an animated short about our all-too-fast approaching future with—or against—AI. It’s the latest NFB film by Winnipeg-based Cordell Barker, a two-timeOscar nominee for The Cat Came Back and Strange Invaders.
- Good Luck to You All will be showcased in a new NFB.ca channel featuring the rest of his wildly imaginative body of work, spanning four decades.

The Muse by Wanda Nolan (18 min)

- When 74-year-old Robert Tilley agreed to take photographer Ting Ting Chen on a road trip across Newfoundland, neither could have predicted the cross-generational friendship that would blossom.
- The Muse has garnered four awards, including Best Atlantic Short Documentary at the Atlantic International Film Festival, and is nominated for a Canadian Screen Award for Best Short Documentary.
In the Closet by Ajahnis Charley (6 x 13 min)

- Figuring out who you are is messy—especially when the world is telling you you’re “not non-binary enough.” In this docu-series, Ajahnis Charley raids their enby besties’ closets looking to affirm both their identity and their hotness.
- Two episodes per week will be released globally on YouTube on Mondays at 8 p.m. EDT starting May 25.
- The writer, director and host of In the Closet, Ajahnis is joined by iconic comedian Bren D’Souza, actor Amanda Cordner, improviser to the stars J. Mausner, comedy writer Meg MacKay and Drag Queen extraordinaire Chelazon Leroux.
Asian Heritage Month, starting May 1
This online channel offers a rich collection of 36 stories from Canadians with roots across Asia, including Jeong Dahee’s award-winning animated short Society of Clothes (Miyu Productions/Between the Pictures/NFB) and powerful feature documentaries such as Nisha Pahuja’s Oscar-nominated To Kill a Tiger (Notice Pictures/NFB) and Yuqi Kang’s 7 Beats Per Minute (Intuitive Pictures/NFB).
Canadian Screen Awards, starting May 1
As film lovers across the country get ready for the Canadian Screen Awards, May 27 to 31, the NFB is bringing together five of its nominated films from this year on a single channel.
- Incandescence, directed by Nova Ami and Velcrow Ripper, is a two‑time nominee, for the Rob Stewart Award for Best Science or Nature Documentary Program or Series and Best Sound, Documentary or Factual (Velcrow Ripper, David Pullmer, Miguel Nunes, Alex Macia, Devon Quelch).
- Chris Lavis and Maciek Szczerbowski’s Oscar-winning The Girl Who Cried Pearls is nominated for Best Animated Short while Serville Poblete’s King’s Court is up for Best Short Documentary.
- ca is also featuring two craft nominees in the Feature-Length Documentary category: Parade: Queer Acts of Love and Resistance (Ricardo Acosta for Best Editing) and The Stand (Geneviève Vincent for Best Original Music).
