Despite the miraculous science of neuroplasticity, the human brain stubbornly resists change. Whether it’s breaking small habits or making major transformations, our default is often comfort over reason. The perfect example of this is our practice of monoculture. Even though there are recognized alternatives and a desperate need for biodiversity, we continue to grow one plant per plot. As a result, we’re experiencing a decline in the pollinators required to balance our ecosystems. What if the same was true of our brain? Without flexibility, it remains stagnant and our cognitive ability degrades. Luckily, we can exercise certain brain functions—such as adaptability, memory, creativity, and motor skills—in order to develop its capacity for change. Our survival depends on it.

NeuroFlowers is a mobile game that plants the idea that our minds must flourish in order to blossom, just like a garden. By playing a series of short games featuring colorful flowers and winged creatures, you can sow the seeds of change and reap the rewards of your efforts, all within the rich universe of sound featuring the vocals of Klô Pelgag.

Jeunes Pousses is an internship offered by the NFB’s French Digital Studio. For its fourth edition, six students were selected to create an interactive experience for mobile devices around the theme Optimus. This edition, produced in collaboration with Akufen, features students in production strategy, interactive media, video game creation, screenwriting, graphic design, and music programs at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM), the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT), and the Université de Montréal (UdeM).

The 2019 crop of Jeunes Pousses gave us Bubble, an interactive story that projects us into a Montreal +2°C where humans must survive hostile environmental conditions. The 2018 cohort created Clit Me, a mobile game that openly explores female sexual satisfaction by focusing on the only organ designed exclusively for pleasure: the clitoris. The 2017 cohort created Deroutes, an app that takes Montreal Metro riders on a sonic journey through the city, featuring new Montrealers discussing their first experiences on the Metro.
