Three shorts in competition
The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is participating in this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which runs from June 13 to 18, with three short films in competition: the much-anticipated The Flying Sailor, by acclaimed filmmakers Wendy Tilby and Amanda Forbis, which will have its world premiere at the festival; Meneath: The Hidden Island of Ethics, by award-winning Orkney Cree Métis artist Terril Calder; and Magical Caresses: Sweet Jesus by young director Lori Malépart-Traversy. These films, all of which were directed by talented and acclaimed women animators and produced mostly by women, are striking in their original creative approaches, varied techniques and unique subject matter, ranging from reflections on existence to identity and sexuality. The NFB and its animation studios will also be in the spotlight at the festival’s Studio Focus, an in-person event taking place on June 14.

Two ships collide in a harbour, an explosion shatters a city, and a sailor is hurled skyward. With ears ringing, blood pulsing and guts heaving, he soars high above the mayhem and towards the great unknown. A bold mix of comedy, suspense and philosophy, The Flying Sailor is an exhilarating contemplation of the wonder and fragility of existence.

Meneath: The Hidden Island of Ethics
Perspectives program – Short Films in Competition
2021 | 19 min 22 s
Meneath: The Hidden Island of Ethics dives deeply into the innate contrast between the Seven Deadly Sins (Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Pride and Envy) and the Seven Sacred Teachings (Love, Respect, Wisdom, Courage, Truth, Honesty and Humility), as embodied in the life of a precocious Métis baby. Brought to life by Terril Calder’s darkly beautiful stop-motion animation, Baby Girl’s inner turmoil is laid bare with unflinching honesty. Convinced she’s soiled and destined for Hell, Baby Girl receives Anishinaabe Teachings from Nokomis that fill her with strength and pride, and affirm a path towards healing. Calder’s tour-de-force unearths a hauntingly familiar yet hopeful world that illuminates the bias of colonial systems.

Magical Caresses: Sweet Jesus (Caresses magiques - Doux Jésus)
Competition – TV and Commissioned Films
2022 | 5 episodes x 4 min
Magical Caresses is a series of animated documentaries by Lori Malépart-Traversy, creator of the popular short film Le clitoris. A skillful blend of humour and confession, these four-minute episodes provide a range of female perspectives, taking a healthy and uninhibited approach to demystifying masturbation. The films’ source material is adapted from intimate accounts published in the Caresses magiques book series written and edited by Sarah Gagnon-Piché and Sara Hébert. Using the tremendous creative freedom afforded by animation, Malépart-Traversy tells these stories from a new angle, crafting a bold and insightful original series about solo sexuality.
Episode 3: Sweet Jesus
What happens when masturbation has its “come to Jesus” moment? This animated short takes a light and humorous approach to examining religion’s moral taboos around the female body and desires. A story full of kindness and questioning, in which good and evil intermingle with prayer and caresses.
