The NFB at FIFA 2020 in Montreal and Quebec City: three films selected, including the world premiere and in-competition screening of Monique LeBlanc’s feature doc Plus haut que les flammes (Higher Than Flames Will Go).

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) returns to the International Festival of Films on Art (FIFA) with three films that offer fascinating perspectives on different artistic practices. The selection includes two world premieres: screening in the international competition, the feature-length auteur doc Plus haut que les flammes (Higher Than Flames Will Go) by Acadian filmmaker Monique LeBlanc, a film adaptation of Louise Dupré’s acclaimed book of poetry; and the short documentary À ciel ouvert, portrait d’un pavillon à Venise (Open Sky: Portrait of a Pavilion in Venice) by Katerine Giguère. In addition, Ellie Yonova’s feature-length documentary Luben and Elena will be having its Quebec premiere. FIFA runs from March 17 to 29, 2020, in Montreal and Quebec City.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be at the 38th Rendez-vous Québec Cinéma (RVQC), running from February 26 to March 7, 2020, with 17 productions and co-productions, including two world premieres: the documentary series Ramaillages (Gatherings) by Moïse Marcoux-Chabot and the feature documentary Loin de Bachar (Far from Bashar) by Pascal Sanchez.

Pre-launch screenings of Moïse Marcoux-Chabot’s Ramaillages (Gatherings, NFB) begin February 14 in the Gaspésie. Six-episode documentary series will be available on NFB.ca starting March 7.

After its world-premiere screening received a standing ovation from a sold-out house at the 2019 edition of the Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM), the feature-length documentary Kenbe la, jusqu’à la victoire (Kenbe la, Until We Win), directed by Will Prosper and produced by the NFB, is opening on Friday, January 31, at the Cinémathèque québécoise in Montreal, in its original French and Creole version (French subtitles). A tour of Eastern Quebec will follow starting Monday, February 3.

These changes are designed to strengthen the NFB’s two main production areas, the English and French Programs, while emphasizing the unique character of each studio and establishing a national vision and programming framework.

While continuing to screen at festivals across Canada, the NFB-produced feature documentary Standing on the Line (Franchir la ligne) by Paul Émile d’Entremont will have its Quebec premiere in Montreal on Saturday, November 30, at 3 p.m. at Concordia University’s Alexandre-de-Sève Cinema, in its original English and French version with French subtitles. The screening will be attended by the filmmaker and one of the film’s subjects, former hockey player Brock McGillis. Standing on the Line is part of this year’s lineup for the city’s LGBTQ+ festival Image+Nation, which runs from November 21 to December 1, 2019.
