A National Film Board of Canada production
Canadians have been abandoning traditional media in favour of Internet platforms for years now, and this is especially true of Gen Z, who constantly seek content that speaks to them and that they can identify with. How can young people’s disengagement and lack of interest in modern Quebec television and media productions be explained?
An iconic figure in the new generation of Quebec creators, Mounir Kaddouri delves into the growing gap between the culture industry and young audiences by exploring their motivations, expectations and definitions of appealing content. His investigation outlines the emergence of a new wave of interest in Quebec culture online, which has nevertheless been overlooked by large media institutions.
New perspectives for a Quebecois cultural industry that speaks to new generations.

Moyen métrage (33 min) – Are young people really turning their backs on Quebec television, or does television simply no longer speak to them? Through interviews with students at Montmorency CÉGEP and members of the culture industry, this film examines the generation gap, how society is depicted on screen, flaws in the ratings system, and content-creation and marketing processes.

Coup d’œil (3 min) – Driven by the desire to make the younger generation’s voices heard, Mounir explains why he embarked on this project and invites the audience on a journey shaped by their stories, hopes and realities.

Au foyer (60 min video podcast) – Mounir interviews Catalina Briceño (professor and head of the UQAM School of Media) and Karine Dubois (producer and founder of Picbois Productions) about key stages of the crisis in media since the emergence of the Internet. He also examines flaws in Quebec’s cultural landscape and outlines the systemic changes needed for its survival.

Gros plan (7 min) – Beckybeckboo, a Quebec content creator with roots in Haiti, reflects on the role of her podcast, Woke or Whateva, in Quebec’s media landscape, the representation of youth in the media and the meaning of the word “diversity.”
Long before this project began, the issues raised in Après moi le déluge were already very important to me. I wanted to use the different formats created for ON FILME to offer new perspectives and reframe the discussion on young people’s emotional disengagement from our cultural industry. When discussing the “media crisis,” we often talk almost exclusively about industry funding. And funding is clearly important, but this means that we don’t talk about other key current issues enough. So here is Après moi le déluge. I thank the NFB for their trust.
