Virginia Tangvald’s Ghosts of the Sea opens in Quebec theatres on May 9 after screenings on the festival circuit

Virginia Tangvald’s documentary Les enfants du large (Ghosts of the Sea), a family investigation shot all over the world, opens in Quebec theatres on May 9. The theatrical release will follow the film’s festival tour, first in Quebec and then in Toronto at the prestigious Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival, in the Canadian Spectrum Competition. The filmmaker will be attending several screenings of her documentary on the tour.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) will be at Hot Docs in Toronto with a stellar selection of six NFB documentaries, including Winnipeg director Noam Gonick and Toronto producer Justine Pimlott’s feature doc Parade: Queer Acts of Love & Resistance, presented Thursday, April 24, at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema as the festival’s opening night film.

The National Film Board of Canada is celebrating its 20th year of participation in the Rendez-vous de la Francophonie (RVF). For this year’s RVF, whose theme is “Cultivate your roots!,” the NFB is making six documentary and animation programs available free of charge to francophones and francophiles. Screenings will take place across Canada, from March 1 to 31—from the East Coast to the West Coast, and from the Great Lakes to the Arctic. It’s a great opportunity to highlight the creativity of Canada’s large francophone family and to celebrate our roots together!

International Women’s Day, March 8, has a special significance for the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) as it honours Studio D, its trailblazing English Program feminist film unit and the landmark French Program series En tant que femmes—both of which were founded in 1974 in anticipation of the UN’s International Women’s Year, and marked their 50th anniversaries last year.
